Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2nd Corinthians 7:1)
The promises of God in scripture not only reveal His plans for us but they reveal His nature to us. In 2nd Corinthians 6:16 Paul reminds us that WE are the temple of God. Yes, physically our bodies are temples and we should maintain them as such. But, when Paul says we are the temple, he also means mentally and spiritually.
God wants to dwell in us as He dwelt in the temple. In order for that to happen, the temple must continually be cleansed. Much like when Jesus chased the money changers out of the temple, we must allow God to reveal in us those things that need to be removed. Then, we must let Him remove those things in us that defile His temple.
