Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord ?” … (Proverbs 30:8-9)
We did several trips to Belle Glade, Florida with our youth group in Tennessee helping the local churches serve the community. Belle Glade is one of the poorest cities in America and is minutes from Palm Beach, which is one of the richest cities. Our students went back and forth between the two cities and witnessed the huge disparity between the two. Their hearts were broken for the people of Belle Glade and especially for the kids that live there.
One of the observations the kids made is how happy the people in Belle Glade were even though they had so much less than the people in Palm Beach. They noticed how the people of Belle Glade stayed outside and talked to each other. They are a community and know each other whereas, the people in the neighborhoods of West Palm Beach with all the beautiful homes, tended to avoid each other.
Every time I heard a student say these things, these verses came to mind. Let this be our prayer every day: “Father, keep vanity and lies far from me and only give me what I need to get through. Never give me so much that I am full and satisfied and lose my hunger for you. Open my eyes to your blessings for me so that I will open my hands and share those blessings with others. Give us the courage and boldness to live a life of discomfort in service of you.”
Love Y’all! Be Blessed!
