Come and See

Episode #55: Come and See

He saith unto them, Come and see…(John 1:39)

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (John 1:45-46)

When Jesus was gathering His disciples, He simply said, “Come to me, Follow me.” He didn’t first give them a bunch of rules or tell them all that they were doing wrong. He simply invited them to follow.

When Philip told Nathanael about Jesus, Nathanael doubts because Philip says Jesus is from Nazareth. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nazareth didn’t have the best reputation so how could the Messiah come from there? Sound familiar? When you mention Jesus today, people have a high opinion of Him. However, when you mention “church”, people cringe. So the question now is, “Can Jesus really be found in the church?”

Philip responded simply, “Come and see.” Nathanael went with Philip because of their relationship not because Philip made such a compelling argument. When Nathanael went, Jesus spoke to him and convinced him. This should be a lesson to us. We say all the time, “it’s not about rules, it’s about relationship.” How true that is and how often we miss the total meaning of the statement. It’s not just about our relationship with Jesus. It’s also about our relationship with others. When we invest in a relationship with others, they will be more likely to follow a simple request like ,”Come and see”. We invest in others by giving our time, not by giving a set of rules.

Let us be a people whose lives, not just our words, invite people to, “Come and See” the reason for the hope and joy that drives us.

Love Y’all! Be Blessed!
