Episode #56: Service and Separation
“Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” (James 1:27)
Throw out all the pomp and circumstances. Do away with all the traditions and rituals of “religion” and get down to what God desires of us. We can take this verse literally and go serve the orphans and widows and that would be a commendable thing. But you don’t have to be a Christian to care about orphans and widows.
What James is telling us as Christians is to focus on service and separation. Service to others and separation from the world. Service and separation reflect Love and Holiness which are attributes of God. If we only address the earthly needs of orphans and widows but do not introduce them to God, our Heavenly Father, and let them see that we are to be His bride, we have merely added a morphine drip to their lives and temporarily dulled their pain. Any religion, mission work, or ministry that does not lead others to God is self-serving in nature.
Let us be a people who not only fill the needs we see, but do so in a way that points those we serve to the love and hope of Jesus Christ.
Love Y’all! Be Blessed!
