Episode #62: He Knows Us
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”(John 1:48)
Philip and Nathanael had been studying the writings of Moses and the prophets in order to find the Messiah. The fig tree was a place of shelter and shade where Nathanael could go to pray alone. Philip recognized Jesus because of his knowledge of the scripture but Nathanael was still skeptical. It was when Jesus confirmed He saw Nathanael praying, that Nathanael recognized Jesus. I can only imagine what prayer Nathanael prayed that morning that Jesus answered when he spoke to him.
Jesus saw Nathanael when he was alone and praying. When Nathanael thought he was alone, Jesus says, “I saw you.” We must remember that we are never alone. Let us be a people who take the time each day to retreat to a place where we can spend time with God. Even when we feel alone, He sees us.
