Episode #94: Consistent and Offensive
“When Herod heard of it, he said, “John, the one I beheaded, has been raised! ”” (Mark 6:16)
The fame of Jesus had begun to spread rapidly. Many were amazed by His teaching and the works He did. They would say that he was Elijah or John the Baptist risen from the dead. When Herod heard of the message Jesus was preaching, he believed Jesus was John the Baptist whom he had beheaded. Herod would actually sit and listen to John while he held John captive. John’s message was simple, “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand.”
Jesus preached the exact same message as John and Herod recognized the teaching immediately. The message was simple and to the point and easily recognized. So recognizable that, even an evil man like Herod could remember it. The message of Jesus and John was simple, consistent, and repeatable. Today we tend to water down the message in an effort not to offend. We have our own spin on it in order to make it more understandable. In an effort to avoid offending the audience, we have dressed up the gospel to the point it can’t be recognized or remembered.
We need to get back to the basics that Jesus taught. The message of Jesus is only offensive to sin. Let us be a people who are more concerned about offending the word of God than we are about offending those who need to hear it.
Love Y’all! be Blessed!
