Episode #99: Mindset Matters
“But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s! ” (Mark 8:33)
When Peter rightfully acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ, Jesus began to tell the disciples that He must suffer and die and rise again. This upset Peter because that didn’t fit his ideas of who the Messiah was. Peter had a preconceived idea of how the Messiah was going to deliver them from the oppression of Roman rule. Jesus openly rebukes Peter and calls him Satan. He points out that these small ideas of how the Messiah would serve man have come from Satan. Jesus wasn’t coming to serve man by overthrowing a government. He was coming to serve God by overthrowing sin, death and the grave.
We’re no different from Peter in this respect. We get mad at Jesus because He doesn’t fit our ideas of what we think we need Him to be or do. When our focus is more on our will instead of the will of The Father, we are being small minded like Peter and many of his day. We need to examine our prayer life and our ideas of who we think Jesus is in order to get our hearts on the right track. Let us be a people whose prayers and actions reflect Philippians 2:5, “and let’s have the same mindset of Jesus”.
