Motive to Serve

Episode #106: Motive to Serve

“Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.”But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”(Mark 10:28, 31)

Peter speaks up somewhat boastfully about the sacrifices he and the disciples have made to follow Jesus. His mouth started running before his brain could slow it down. We all probably do that from time to time, I know I do. Jesus goes on in verses 29 and 30 to tell about the rewards His followers will receive in eternity but, He also warns us about the persecution we will face in our current age. Then, in verse 31, He responds to Peter and gives him an attitude check.

Our motives for serving others should come from following the example Jesus laid out for us. If we boast about what we have done for others or what we have done in order to serve, we reveal that our motives were self-serving to begin with. We don’t need to post pictures or stories to social media every time we go on a mission trip or do a service project. Use those platforms to raise awareness to the issues, not to boast about your temporary efforts like some kind of holy vacation.

Paul would sum this up in Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” Let us be a people who examine our motives and get them aligned with the example of Jesus.

Love Y’all! Be Blessed!
