Fruitful and Useful

Episode #108: Fruitful and Useful

“On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry. Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.”    (Mark 11:12-14)

This is not a “feel good” passage. This was symbolic of what was about to happen to the temple. This tree represented Israel and the state of the temple. This tree was in full bloom which should have meant there was fruit on it for Jesus to eat. However, the tree was merely putting on a good show since there was no fruit to be found on it.

Jesus would curse the tree and we see in verse 20 that the next day the tree was withered up all the way to the roots. This tree was full of leaves but was empty of fruit. The temple was full of prayer but empty of faith. If Jesus were to inspect us would he find a tree that looks good at a distance but upon further inspection is fruitless? Are we full of prayer but empty of faith? Let us be a people whose prayers are an overflow of our faith and not empty words for show. Let us be fruitful and useful for the Kingdom of God.

Love Y’all! be Blessed!
